Hurricane Categories
I know some people are curious about what speeds classify a certain category of hurricane. The way the do it is to use the Saffir-Simpson Scale. The storm has to have sustained winds at a certain level, not gusts, to be categorized. Here's the scale:
Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale (Hurricane Categories)
Category 1: Winds 74-95 mph, Storm Surge 4-5 ft above normal
Category 2: Winds 96-110 mph, Storm Surge 6-8 ft above normal
Category 3: Winds 111-130 mph, Storm Surge 9-12 ft above normal
Category 4: Winds 131-155 mph, Storm Surge 13-18 ft above normal
Category 5: Winds 156+ mph, Storm Surge 19+ ft above normal
